Peroneal Tendinopathy
The peroneal tendons run along the outside of the lower leg and wrap behind the lateral malleolus (or bony protuberance on the outside of the ankle). As described in the ‘Achilles’ section the condition is often linked to a change in load or irritation to 1 or more of these tendons leading to an acute burning pain. It is common in runners and dancers and often occurs as a secondary condition to ankle stability or post-surgery due to a change in foot biomechanics and muscle strength.
Physical therapy is essential in its management as well as addressing footwear, movement patterns or technique and training programmes.
